âIâll give it to you, this food is delicious,â I said with a mouthful.
âI told you. See, youâre probably used to eating that bland rich people food,â she replied. I wiped my mouth and smirked at her.
âI may be rich, but Iâm still black. We eat soul food,â I let her know. She gave me a skeptical look.
âYeah, right. If the person making it hasnât been through any struggle, then itâs not real soul food,â she replied before stuffing a fork full of collards in her mouth.
âYou have an interesting logic. However, I donât think it has any merit,â I said.
âIâm not surprised you think that. Anyway, whatâs with your brother and his wife? He ashamed of his blackness or something?â
âNah, heâs just a spoiled rich kid whoâs mad he didnât get his way. He wanted to be the CEO of our fatherâs company, but the responsibility went to me. Not long after that, he slept with my wife and got her pregnant,â I explained, shocking myself. I would never discuss my past so casually, especially with a woman. Hell, Iâd never told Ava why I got divorced and she and I had been sleeping together for a year.
âDamn! Thatâs fucked up,â she said, shaking her head. She paused briefly before cutting her eyes at me. âOh, shoot! Iâm so sorry! I shouldnât use that kind of language around you. I almost forgot youâre my boss!â
Her sudden realization caused me to laugh out loud, something I hadnât done in a long time. âItâs fine. I prefer you to be yourself, rather than pretending to be someone youâre not. Itâs refreshing to speak with you,â I admitted. I watch a schoolgirl grin appear on her face.
âIâm glad to hear that. So, does this mean I can get a raise?â she asked, causing my smile to drop. She roared in laugher to the point she could barely breathe.
âChill, Iâm just kidding. You know what a joke is, right? You should loosen up some.â
âRumi!â someone called out. We both turned our heads to see a man marching over to us with the look of death in his eyes.
âOh lord, here we go,â she said, rolling her eyes hard.
âAye! You ainât see me calling you?â the man barked.
âNo, because I blocked your lying, trifling ass! Get away from me, Chaos!â she said, waving him off. I watched as the man clenched his fist together.
âYou cost me my job, Rumi! My wife is leaving me because of you,â he spat. Some people in the restaurant turned their attention towards us. I guess today was the day of drama. Rumi didnât seem to be bothered by the manâs anger.
âWell, thatâs what you get! You lied to me, Chaos! I had no idea you were married, and weâd been together for a year! I didnât know you didnât own the barbershop you worked at! I should call your wife and tell her how many times we fucked on her fatherâs office desk,â she barked, giving him a look of disgust.
